Nicola Sturgeon to reveal more Phase 2 changes and dates

| |

Scots will find out today when social distancing rules can be relaxed to help the country out of lockdown.

Nicola Sturgeon has already put a timetable to her wider plans, including for beer gardens and travel restrictions. But officials have been working on their own advice about whether to reduce the two-metre rule, like in England.

Yesterday, the First Minister warned a new cross-border cluster of infection near Dumfries shows the virus is still a major public health risk.

However, she is expected to confirm the final “phase two” dates and have some good news to help children have a “slightly more normal” summer holiday.

Here’s everything you need to know about what Nicola Sturgeon will announce today.

Travel and tourism

The five-mile travel guidance will be lifted from Friday, according to the Scottish Government’s plan. Self-catering accommodation, with self-contained facilities, and second homes can also reopen at the same time.

Social distancing

Today was also marked as the latest opportunity to examine evidence on any changes to the two-metre social distance rule. It has already been halved in England, but with other strict measures in place. There could be further rules on face coverings after calls to make them mandatory.

Cutting the 2m rule in some circumstances is seen as necessary for businesses to open up and to get children back into full-time education in August.

A beer garden in the Grassmarket, Edinburgh, has been prepared for permission to open.

Beer gardens

Original plans to open outdoor hospitality were delayed last month after fears infection can spread more rapidly in pubs. Fresh advice was ordered to see if, as now expected, beer gardens can finally reopen from Monday next week.
