OWENS CROSS ROADS, Ala. – The IU Indianapolis women’s golf team used a balanced effort in finishing seventh overall at this week’s Huntsville.org Intercollegiate at the RJT Golf Trail at Hampton Cove. The Jaguars closed the event at 958 (324-312-322) as both Cassidy Ayres and Reagan Sohn topped the lineup at 239 each.
“This week was a great learning opportunity for our team as we got to compete against strong southern programs,” Sohn said. “It’s always nice to play outside again after hitting indoors all offseason. We now know what areas of our game need extra focus heading into the rest of the spring season.”
The lineup received a shot in the arm as both Ayres and Sohn returned after missing virtually the entire fall schedule.
In round one, senior Yanah Rolston led the way with an 80 while both Sohn and freshman Li (Sherry) Xia shot 81 each. Ayres carded a countable 82 and freshman Emma Frauhiger closed at 84. Sophomore Lexi Stuart finished with an 86 while playing as an individuals. Sohn made four birdies in round one while Rolston made two.
Round two was the best of the tournament for the Jaguars, despite being halted due to darkness. Ayres carded a 1-over 73, including six birdies, which came in an eight hole span. Rolston shot 77 and Sohn shot 79 while Xia was countable at 83. Both Rolston and Sohn had a pair of birdies in round two.
The final round saw Xia lead the way with a 77 and Sohn shot 79. Frauhiger and Ayres rounded out the scoring four at 82 and 84, respectively.
“Although I didn’t score as I had wanted to, I was just grateful to be back out on the course and supporting my team,” Sohn said. “After missing all fall season due to injuries, it’s fun to compete again. We will all continue pushing each other in practice and getting better as the season progresses.”
Austin Peay won the event by seven shots over second-place North Alabama, finishing at 882. Belmont’s Sloane Biddle earned medalist honors at 2-under 214, winning by three shots.
The Jaguars will return to action on Mar. 16-17 when they compete in the Jackrabbit Invitational in Boulder City, Nev.
