A man is dead after his cargo van crashed off a bridge in Brunswick, Maine, police announced Thursday morning.
Brandon Macfarland was driving a Ford Transit on the Route 196 onramp towards Route 1 northbound around 6:49 p.m. Wednesday when the crash occurred. Police say the 22-year-old failed to maintain his lane as he went over the bridge, and his vehicle drove up on an icy embankment, over the barrier and then fell to the ground below,
Macfarland was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Route 1 onramp was completely closed, and Route 1 northbound was open to just one lane for several hours after the crash.
Topsham police, the Brunswick Fire Department, the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office, and the Maine Department of Transportation all assisted.
It’s unclear at this time why Macfarland’s van didn’t stay in its lane, or if slick road conditions played any kind of role in the crash. The Brunswick Police Department’s crash reconstruction unit is conducting an investigation into what happened.
