GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Softball team used a pair of 2-1 victories over West Virginia State on Saturday (Mar. 21) and two strong pitching performances on Sunday (Mar. 22) against Charleston to open Mountain East Conference play (4-0). The Pioneers 3-0 and 7-2 victories over the Golden Eagles capped off the strong MEC opening weekend for GSU.
Saturday (Mar. 21)
Game One – GSU 2 | West Virginia State 1
The Pioneers trailed early in the weekend, falling behind 1-0 in the top of the second on a WVSU RBI single. Two innings later, Zailees Seda continued her hot start to 2026 with a home run that knotted things up at one. The next batter, Delaney Warnick, showed off her power with a solo shot of her own to give Glenville State their first lead of the afternoon, 2-1. Kylie Burdick allowed just one more base runner in the final three innings, shutting the door on the Yellow Jackets to open up MEC play with a win.
Game Two – GSU 2 | West Virginia State 1
GSU entered the weekend with under five home runs this season, and they hit their third in one day when Emma McLean notched a solo home run in the bottom of the 2nd. A standstill ensued, but it would be the Pioneers who ended the scoreless drought with a Alexis Harward sacrifice fly to extend the advantage, 2-0. That run proved to be crucial, with West Virginia State getting on the board in the top of the 7th, however, Maci Boggess stayed poised and secured the doubleheader sweep for GSU, 2-1.
Sunday (Mar. 22)
Game One – GSU 3 | Charleston 0
The Golden Eagles, who ended Glenville State’s historic 2025 season, came into Sunday’s doubleheader (2-0) in league play as well. Emily Nolan has been off to a great start this season, and that continued with her solo home run in the bottom of the 2nd inning. An inning later, Delaney Warnick roped a single down the left field line to bring home Shelby McDaniels and make it 2-0. Kylie Burdick kept producing zeros on the scoreboard and Zailees Seda rewarded her with another insurance run in the bottom of the 5th on an RBI single. Burdick gave up just three hits and walked one batter en route to the Pioneers 3-0 shutout victory.
Game Two – GSU 7 | Charleston 2
Unlike game one, it was the Golden Eagles who scored first, as a sac fly and RBI single put Charleston in the lead in the first inning. Emily Nolan broke the zero off the scoreboard for GSU in the third with an RBI single, trimming the deficit to 2-1. The fourth inning saw Hannah Howe homer and Zailees Seda bring Emma McLean home on an RBI double, giving the blue and white their first lead of the game, 3-2. Glenville State blew the game wide open in the 6th, plating four runs to run away with the game, 7-2.
