Thanks to a nearly $5 billion investment from Veterans Affairs in its network of medical centers, a local center will see much-needed upgrades to its operations.

The Boise VA Medical Center will undergo upgrades to its location “to ensure safe and effective patient care,” it stated in a release. The $4.8 billion in spending across the U.S. is to help modernize, repair and improve VA health care facilities throughout 2026 under the non-recurring maintenance program.
“Improved facilities, equipment and infrastructure mean better care for veterans, and these funds will enable Boise VA Medical Center to achieve that goal,” said David Wood, director of the Boise VA Medical Center. “Better care for veterans is our goal, and these projects will enable us to achieve just that.”
During the first fiscal quart of 2026, the Boise VAMC will see renovations to Building T111, Building 28 and the sterile processing service space. It will also have its GSA parking lot paved.
Nationwide, the VA is investing $2.8 billion to repair and upgrade “outdated” infrastructure in its medical facilities. Another $1 billion will be used for maintenance and modernization of facilities’ electronic health record systems. $500 million will go toward building upgrades for elevators and electrical system and other items. Another $500 million will be used to modernize facilities “for current and future care.”
“Improved facilities, equipment and infrastructure mean better care for veterans and these funds will enable VA to achieve that goal,” said Doug Collins, secretary of the agency.
In the past year, investments by Veterans Affairs has helped to reduce the backlog of veterans waiting for benefits by 60%, according to the agency. It also stated that it has eliminated the backlog of veteran families waiting for health care through the VA.
Along with those achievements, the VA stated it had:
- Processed record numbers of disability claims, reaching an all-time fiscal year high of 3 million claims processed Sept. 30;
- Opened 25 new health care clinics, expanding access for vets around the country;
- And offered veterans more than 1.9 million appointments outside of normal operating hours, giving veterans more options for care.
