CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — March is recognized as Endometriosis Awareness Month in the United States, highlighting a condition that impacts millions of women each year.
Endometriosis occurs when tissue from a woman’s uterus ends up in other parts of the body. Novant Health OBGYN doctors in South Carolina say the condition is problematic because of the pain and discomfort it causes.
Women face several factors that make it difficult to know whether they have the condition.
Pierce said women who think they may be dealing with symptoms consistent with endometriosis should speak to their medical professional.
“It starts in adolescence, and so if you’ve lived with it your whole life, you may end up thinking ‘that’s just me’ when in actuality it’s endometriosis, and you’re having moderate to severe symptoms, but you just don’t put it together,” Dr. Tyler Pierce, an OBGYN with Novant Health, said.
