The Madness has finally come to the Women’s NCAA Tournament.
After a round and a half of mostly predictable basketball, our first major upset of the tournament has happened with No. 10 seed Virginia taking down No. 2 Iowa 83-75 in double overtime in the second round on Monday, March 23, pulling off the road upset on the Hawkeye’s home court.
The win in Iowa City made Virginia the first team in Women’s NCAA Tournament history to advance to the Sweet 16 from the First Four. Virginia beat Arizona State last week then upset No. 7 Georgia on Saturday, March 21.
Now, the Cavaliers are into the women’s Sweet 16 for the first time since 2000 when they were coached by Hall of Famer Debbie Ryan.
With the victory, Cavaliers fans around the nation were shouting “Wa-Hoo” in victory, singing their team’s praises, wonders for the Wahoos.
But why is Virginia called the Wahoos anyway? What relation could Cavaliers have to their other, unofficial nickname? Is there any relation at all?
Not really, but here’s why the Cavaliers gave themselves such an interesting nickname:
Why are the Virginia Cavaliers called the Wahoos?
The terms “Wahoos” or “Hoos” are almost exclusively used by Virginia students when referring to their athletes and fans.
The term dates back to the university’s old rivalries with Washington and Lee University during the 1890s. Students at the rival university would deride Virginia fans by calling them “Wahoos”, mocking the student body’s victory chant “Wa-hoo-wa”.
By 1940, Virginia students had embraced the nickname, with the abbreviated “Hoos” garnering more popularity in recent years.

Virginia’s next matchup is set for Saturday, March 28 when the Wahoos face No. 3 seed TCU in the Sweet 16.

The Iowa Hawkeyes are once again in the postseason, competing in the NCAA women’s tournament. This year, they are back near the top and hosting the first two rounds at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.
By reaching the Big Ten Tournament final and earning a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, Jan Jensen has announced that this is her Iowa program and it has staying power.

Nebraska looks like a solid bounce-back spot against Iowa. The Cornhuskers are coming off a tough loss to UCLA, but had won 3 of their previous 4 games, scoring at least 74 points in each of those wins. Defense is where Nebraska really separates itself. The Cornhuskers rank first in defensive efficiency in the Big Ten, forcing turnovers, rebounding well and holding opponents to just 29% shooting from 3-point range.
Iowa, meanwhile, has struggled offensively for a while now. The Hawkeyes haven’t shot better than 32.1% from deep in their last 8 games and haven’t scored more than 76 points since early February. Over the last month, Iowa is shooting just 27.8% from 3 while allowing 50% overall shooting and 42% from beyond the arc on defense.
Nebraska also has a balanced offense, shooting 37% from 3, 56.2% from 2 and 78% from the free-throw line. If this game turns into a scoring battle, Iowa hasn’t shown the offense lately to keep up.

I lean toward the Over in this matchup. Even though the first meeting this season stayed Under, the previous 7 of the 9 matchups between Iowa and Nebraska went Over the total. The trends are a bit mixed lately, which is why it’s more of a lean. Iowa is 5-5 against the total in its last 10 games, while Nebraska is 4-4 in its last 8. Nebraska’s defense can limit Iowa’s outside shooting, but the Cornhuskers should still be able to score consistently against the Hawkeyes’ defense, giving this game a good chance to creep Over the number.

A scary moment in the opening minutes as Iowa senior star Hannah Stuelke injured her right (shooting) arm after getting tangled up with an Illinois player as they went after a loose ball. Stuelke went to the locker room but returned to the bench with about 4 minutes left. Hopefully she can return to the floor soon for her final regular-season game at Carver-Hawkeye.
Ava Heiden has eight points early to lead Iowa. Former Hawkeye Aaliyah Guyton has five points to lead Illinois.
Update: Stuelke returned to the game after the under-5 media timeout.

The Hawkeyes get all they can handle against an Illinois squad most recently projected as an NCAA Tournament No. 8 seed by ESPN. But steady production via Ava Heiden, plus more defensive and rebounding dominance from Hannah Stuelke, successfully push Iowa across the finish line. Look for a rebound performance from Chit-Chat Wright as well after two tough games.
