RALEIGH, N.C. (WECT) – North Carolina officials are urging residents statewide to prepare for severe weather after the National Weather Service issued a rare Level 4 Moderate Risk for parts of the state.

The WECT First Alert Weather Team warns that the main dangers from this storm include damaging wind gusts, hail and the potential for tornadoes.

On Sunday, March 15, North Carolina Emergency Management activated State Emergency Response Team personnel and resources in anticipation of severe weather impacts on Monday, March 16.

“While North Carolina is no stranger to severe weather, the introduction of a Level 4 out of 5 moderate threat is very rare in our state,” said NC Emergency Management Director Will Ray. “It is imperative that all North Carolinians have a plan to protect themselves and their families and stay informed to take action when necessary.”

Governor Josh Stein also urged residents to act ahead of the storm.

“Please make sure emergency alerts are enabled on your phone and make a plan for how to keep yourself and your family safe,” Stein said.

The severe weather risk varies across the state:

  • Central North Carolina — Level 4 Moderate Risk
  • Eastern North Carolina and the foothills — Level 3 Enhanced Risk
  • Portions of the mountains — Level 2 Slight Risk

Officials say residents should have a plan in place for where they will take cover during a tornado warning. Residents are also advised to enable emergency alerts on their cell phones, monitor local news, and follow updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency management offices.
