Vigil for family of Trenton Massey

by Diego Ramírez – Managing Editor

CORUNNA, Mich. (WNEM) – A vigil was held Thursday night in support of the family of Trenton Massey, the Corunna man who disappeared over the weekend in Marquette.

Massey is a student at Northern Michigan University, and while the search for him is suspended for now, people in his hometown are thinking of him.

“It’s been tough, you know? It’s been a tough week,” said Steve Herrick, assistant principal at Corunna Middle School.

The field was filled with memories, sadness and tight embraces.

“Everywhere you go, you see people that are; you look at each other, and everybody starts crying,” said Amy Garrett, friend of the family and the organizer of the vigil. “It’s been emotional.”

Police in Marquette have suspended active search efforts for 21-year-old Massey. He was last seen on surveillance video around 3 a.m. Sunday, walking toward Founder’s Landing near Lake Superior.

Since then — days of searching on ground, from the air, and in the water. Divers, sonar, drones, K-9s and helicopters.

“And we’re not giving up hope,” said Michelle Holmes, a friend of the family. “We will continue to be hopeful and pray and wait for him to be reunited with his family again.”

Investigators said they will continue to follow tips, but for now, organized search operations have stopped. Back home in Corunna, the waiting is the hardest part.

“We care for the people in this community,” said Herrick. “And no matter whether you’re in Marquette or Timbuktu. If you’re from Corunna, you’re a Corunna person and we’re going to take care of you.”

Massey graduated from Corunna High School in 2022. People said he left a quiet but lasting mark, the kind you do not forget. The vigil at Nick Annese Athletic Field was about support for his mom, his family, and his friends.

“I could say so much about him,” said Garrett. “But, this shows what he meant to everyone and what his family means.”

Candles raised and prayers whispered, the community stood still but stood together.

“We hope the family has peace,” said Herrick. “Has some comfort as they’re moving forward in looking for Trenton.”

Investigators said the search will resume with any new evidence.
