CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WCHS) — The city of Charleston’s Parks and Recreation department hosted an urban fishing event on Saturday at the North Charleston Community Center.
The event allows for families and their kids to fish for free in an accessible setting. Rookie anglers and seasoned vets were invited to come out and go fishing.
Families brought their own fishing poles, bait, nets and buckets to bring home whatever they caught.
“I just love to help the youth,” event volunteer Jace Fisher said. “See them light up when they catch a fish, see the reaction when they touch a fish for the first time. I just love to see youth getting exposed to wildlife and outdoor recreation, outdoor activities.”
Urban fishing is part of the city’s ongoing effort to engage the community and provide them with outdoor activities near their homes.
For those who missed out on the event on Saturday, the North Charleston Community Center will host the event again from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
