Más de 220,000 people have been evacuated as massive wildfires continue to spread across France and Spain, forcing thousands from their homes and prompting both governments to deploy additional emergency resources.

In south-west France, authorities have evacuated around 200,000 people after wildfires ripped through the Gironde and Landes regions. French authorities ordered the evacuation of nearly 60,000 more residents near Bordeaux, raising the total number of people displaced in southwestern France to about 200,000. Some 141,000 fled homes in the Gironde and Landes departments in France, the French interior ministry said.

In the early hours of Saturday, four towns near Bordeaux were evacuated as a precaution. Cuatro ciudades cercanas a Burdeos fueron desalojadas como medida de precaución en la madrugada del sábado, afectando a localidades como Saint-Médard-en-Jalles, Saint-Jean d’Illac, Martignas-sur-Jalles y Saint-Aubin de Médoc, which together have a population of 58,400 residents.

France and Spain battle devastating wildfires as thousands evacuated

The Gironde blaze, described by local prefect Sophie Brocas as an «XXL fire», has burned through more than 19,000 hectares (46,000 acres) of forest and destroyed about 80 homes. Officials evacuated the entire Cap Ferret peninsula on the south-west coast, with hundreds escaping by boat after flames swept through the popular tourist destination. The area has a year-round population of just under 8,000 people, but numbers can increase 10 fold during the summer holiday season.

Fire and rescue chief Marc Vermeulen said conditions were more severe than during the devastating fires that hit the region in 2022, with drought enabling the blaze to continue spreading through the night.

Dozens of French firefighters were injured, authorities said, but no deaths were reported in either country despite the scenes of panic as townsfolk fled by car and police went door to door to tell people to leave as large plumes of smoke rose from the neighboring woodlands.

He said the blaze was self-sustaining and changing direction, and that the large wildfire that ravaged large swaths of land in southwestern France is heading toward the city of Bordeaux.

Del otro lado de la frontera, el gobierno de España declaró una emergencia nacional después de que wildfires burnt out of control in several areas close to the capital Madrid, prompting the evacuation of more than 19,000 people (while official reports note around 25,000 people have been evacuated, with nearly 40,000 others advised to remain indoors as the fire advances toward the municipalities of Robledo de Chavela and Fresnedillas de la Oliva, about 50 kilometres west of Madrid). In central Spain, 60,000 were forced from their homes, according to the Spanish interior ministry.

Responding to the spread of fires,

Spanish authorities have declared a national emergency after three wildfires west of Madrid merged into a single blaze that officials said had exceeded firefighters’ capacity to contain.

Ante la magnitud de la crisis, French President Emmanuel Macron has mobilised the military to assist evacuation and firefighting operations as multiple blazes continue to spread across the region, according to the BBC. Firefighters and authorities in both European countries were caught off guard by the virulence of the fires, which were fueled by high temperatures and the long-term effects of climate change. Firefighters in Spain admitted the fires were so fast and violent that they could not be tackled head on.
