VESTAL, N.Y. – Binghamton baseball (7-11, 2-3 America East) scored a season-high 16 runs to steamroll past visiting UMass Lowell (8-10, 1-1 AE) 16-10 Saturday afternoon at Bearcats Baseball Complex. The win evened the series at one game apiece and set up the rubber game Sunday morning.
Saturday’s game featured 26 runs, 25 hits, two video reviews and an ejection – all after a 37-minute delay due to a fire alarm stadium evacuation.
After the delayed start, the Bearcats fired up the offense right away with two runs in the first inning and another in the second. UML tied the game with three runs in the third but Binghamton exploded for 13 runs in the middle three innings to pull away. The onslaught began with seven runs in the fourth inning and continued with three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth. The final three runs restored order after UML put six in the board in the top of the frame.
Sophomore starter Brady Bouchard notched his first win of the season with 5.2 innings. He scattered six hits. Freshman reliever Mason Holloway worked the final two scoreless innings and allowed just one hit and struck out a pair.
Offensively, every player in the lineup had a hit or RBI. Sophomore second baseman Sean Sweeney had two hits and four RBI and sophomore DH Tommy Popoff went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Junior catcher Zach Anderson belted a 3-run home run (in the fourth) and sophomore center fielder Matt Bolton added two hits and three RBI. Sophomore third baseman Tim Hennig reached base four times with two hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
The Bearcats drew nine walks and produced 11 runs with two out. During one middle-inning stretch, Binghamton had nine of 10 batters reach base.
The teams close the series at 10 a.m. Sunday in an early game designed to beat the impending rain in the forecast.
