A Mount Pleasant man faces a second-degree murder charge after a woman was fatally shot late Saturday night in Burlington, according to police.
BURLINGTON, Iowa — A Mount Pleasant man has been charged with murder after a woman was fatally shot late Saturday night in Burlington.
According to the Burlington Police Department, officers responded at approximately 11:20 p.m. on March 7 to the 1500 block of Agency Street for a report of one person who had been shot.
Upon arrival, officers located a female with what appeared to be a single gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was later pronounced deceased.
A Burlington police investigation identified a suspect as Kaysean A. Rice, 22, of Mount Pleasant.
Rice was later located in the 2100 block of East Washington Street in Mount Pleasant by the Mount Pleasant Police Department.
Police said Rice had a Washington County warrant for violation of a no-contact order. He was placed under arrest and transported to the Des Moines County Correctional Center.
Rice is additionally charged with second-degree murder, a Class B felony; reckless use of a firearm, a Class C felony; and intimidation with a dangerous weapon, an aggravated misdemeanor.
The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Police believe the incident was isolated and say there is no further danger to the public.
