SIOUX FALLS — Authorities have identified the victim of an Interstate 29 that killed one person last week north of Sioux Falls.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol identified the victim as 56-year-old James Knapp, of Aberdeen.
Troopers say that shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday, March 12, Knapp was operating a 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo southbound on Interstate 29 near mile marker 88, roughly four miles north of Sioux Falls.
According to a crash investigation, the Monte Carlo came to a complete stop within the driving lane and was struck from behind by a 2025 Peterbilt semi, driven by a 35-year-old man from St. Paul. The collision caused the Monte Carlo to come to rest in the west ditch.
Knapp was not wearing a seat belt, and died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. The semi driver was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
