Siemens anticipa pérdidas millonarias tras fallo en turbinas de Gamesa

Siemens Energy announces a cut of 400 million in Gamesa Games

A week after the announcement of the German government’s rescue, Siemens Energy announced on Tuesday that it plans to make an adjustment in its costs of around 400 million euros in its wind subsidiary, the Spanish Siemens Gamesa according to the CEO of this business, Jochen Eickholt  during the celebration of the company’s ‘Capital Markets Day’. The German company has been penalized by manufacturing failures in onshore turbines (4.X and 5.X), as well as by the slowdown in the wind market in general with losses of 4.588 million euros during this year.

According to the company’s estimates, there are around 2,900 installed turbines of platforms 4.X and 5.X. These models have been manufactured in Spain and Portugal in the factories of Agreda (Soria) and Vacantes (Aveiro, Portugal), as Eickholt has revealed. But the executive has ruled out pointing directly to those factories because the problem is more “complex” as it is related to different parts of the supply chain such as materials, components and also the manufacturing process, he said. “I think it would be myopic to point to those areas sometimes, for example, in the case of the model 4.X we had manufacturing problems from China and we also had blades that came from Mexico “, he explained.

The saving of those 400 million euros will focus on “ simplifying the organization and optimizing general costs ” with the aim of reaching the break-even point of its wind subsidiary in 2026, after the forecast of new losses in the next two years, but the company has not given more details of what that cut will consist of . In last week’s earnings call, the CEO of Siemens Energy , cristiano bruch, stated that the company did not plan to reduce its workforce in Spain, beyond reorganizing the business to achieve more efficiencies.

Siemens Energy fully absorbed the Spanish Gamesa in June of this year, but the company is not yet fully integrated as explained by Christian Bruch, who assured that in day to day they expect to operate as a single company from 2024 to start taking advantage then of the synergies produced by an integrated company.

The German company has also explained that it plans to focus its onshore wind business on the 5.X model as the “main platform” to “ensure the restart of sales” after solving its quality problems and with the focus on the European market. “In other regions we could reduce our activities from our original perspective,” Eickholt assured. While in the case of ‘offshore’ wind, it is about increasing production with greater operational organization to meet the increase in demand and reduce costs. But also improving the profitability of new orders increasing their price, among other issues.
